Here we are, 2017 has just passed and there's no better moment than the first days of the new year to take stock of the year gone by. The oficina de acogida al peregrino of Santiago Cathedral has just released all the figures on pilgrims who reached Santiago during 2017 and collected their Compostela certificate.
If the 277,854 pilgrims in 2016 had left us speechless, the over 300,000 in 2017 reach numbers that were perhaps predictable, but never seen before.
The exact number of pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago is 301,006. An impressive figure! It's as if every single day for 365 days, 825 people lined up at the oficina del peregrino. Among them are first-time pilgrims, people who may have dreamed of making this journey their whole lives, or those suddenly drawn to the Camino who decided to set out without overthinking it. But there are also countless pilgrims returning for their second, third, or tenth time on the path, many choosing quieter, lesser-known, less-travelled routes.

Though increasingly more people seek out lesser-known pilgrimage routes, the French Way remains firmly at the top of the list of most popular routes: with its 180,000 pilgrims, it commands absolute supremacy.
Pilgrims' second choice once again falls on the beautiful Portuguese Way, with nearly 60,000 people. The gap is significant, with a ratio of one-third compared to the French Way.
Much further behind in terms of numbers we find:
- Northern Route, with nearly 18,000;
- Primitive Route, with nearly 14,000;
- English Way, with over 11,000;
- Via de la Plata, with just 9,000;
- Portuguese Coastal Route, with 6,630 pilgrims.
The most significant and new figure for 2017 is precisely that of the Portuguese Coastal Route: not only is this the first time it appears on the list of major routes, but it has already achieved impressive numbers, proof that it's a fascinating trail, well-marked and well-equipped for pilgrims.

As we know, Sarria never ceases to register staggering numbers, practically unmatched. With its 80,000 departures, it accounts for a quarter of the total on its own. Following, as in previous years, are Saint Jean Pied de Port, with 33,000 departures, and Porto, with 22,000. Tui, on the Portuguese Way, also performs well, reaching 20,000 departures.
Completing the top 10 starting points, we must mention the cities of León (Camino de Santiago from León), Ferrol (English Way), Cebreiro, Oviedo (Primitive Route), Ponferrada, and Valença do Miño (Portuguese Way).

With a percentage of 44%, the Spanish are by far the largest group of pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago. Many take advantage of their geographical proximity to the pilgrimage routes, often splitting the Camino into weeks or weekend segments.
Very different is the case for pilgrims from other nationalities, who, coming from afar, find this arrangement more challenging. Perhaps due to geographical proximity or cultural affinity, Italian pilgrims are the most numerous after the Spanish. We're talking about 27,070 people—an enormous number, which I'm sure includes you!
Following are the Germans with over 23,000, the United States with 17,000, the Portuguese with nearly 13,000, the French with nearly 9,000, the Irish with 6,000, the British with nearly 6,000, and the Brazilians with 5,000. Compared to the previous year, which saw Koreans in last place, this year the Brazilians claim a substantial presence on the Camino de Santiago.
In short, with its 300,000 pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago, 2017 was truly a record-breaking year! Now comes the all-important question: what other surprises will 2018 bring us?
