The 1,335 arrivals in Santiago during January could signal a very busy year ahead in 2017.

Here we are again with a new chapter in the statistics of arrivals at Santiago de Compostela. A fresh year of numbers, data, percentages, behavioural trends and new insights begins today.
We wrapped up 2016 with record-breaking numbers, confirming the positive trend of previous years. During the Jubilee Year of Mercy, nearly 280,000 pilgrims earned the Compostela certificate. Among these, 23,951 were Italian—the largest international group of pilgrims.
Now there is only one question on everyone's mind: what will 2017 bring? Will it surpass last year's numbers, or shall we see a slowdown? Join us as we track these statistics month by month to find out together.

2017 has started exceptionally well. There were 1,335 arrivals in Santiago in January, 28 more than the same period last year, and 529 more than in 2013.
Despite these encouraging figures, it's still too early to make predictions about the coming months, but the trend is clearly positive, and there's no indication that the Camino's popularity is waning.

A consistent feature of January is the gender ratio of pilgrims. Last month saw 435 women earn the Compostela, compared to 900 men—a ratio of just over two to one.
The balance between Spanish and international pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago has also held steady with previous years' patterns. 554 Spaniards, mostly from the Madrid region, were significantly outnumbered by 781 international pilgrims from all corners of the globe.
Among the top eight nationalities, South Koreans led with 206 pilgrims, followed by Italians at 92, and then Germans, Americans, Portuguese, Brazilians, French, and Australians.
Sarria continues to hold the top position as the most popular departure point for the Camino de Santiago. The next preferred starting points are Saint Jean Pied de Port, Porto, Tui, León, and Ferrol.
The French Way captures 62% of preferences, with 828 pilgrims choosing this route. The Portuguese Way comes in second with 21%, significantly ahead of the English Way at 5%, which nonetheless ranks third. Following are the Northern Way, the Primitive Way, the Via de la Plata, and the Ways to Muxía and Finisterre, all with considerably smaller numbers.
Ready to see what February has in store for us? Who knows—perhaps you'll be among those numbers next month!
