The Northern Way from Santander to Oviedo is a journey through the beauty and spectacular character of its coastline, where temperate but humid conditions prevail, bringing with them occasional rain even in summer. Among the many sunny days, we encountered a few rainy periods as well.

As in the previous stretch, from Bilbao to Santander, the views are truly evocative. The highlight is that there's considerably less road walking, so you'll often trek on trails and dirt paths.

The terrain becomes more hilly, and you'll notice far more agricultural fields.

You'll continue to be captivated by the beauty of the ocean, which often surprises you by appearing unexpectedly beyond the hillside you're traversing.

There are countless apple orchards, whose fruit is essential for producing sidra (cider), a signature product of much of Asturias. Sidra is an alcoholic beverage with a distinctive, acquired taste. When you arrive at Oviedo, you'll understand how emblematic it is to the city. There's even a historic quarter dedicated to it, filled with bars and cider houses. What captured our attention wasn't so much the drink itself, but the distinctive way of pouring it into a glass, which is quite theatrical.

The Northern Way from Santander to Oviedo is therefore an experience immersed in captivating cultures and traditions, where the Asturian people embody a particular spirit of regional pride.

From balconies and windowsills, countless blue flags wave proudly, symbols of a local identity that's also reflected in the azure colour of many houses throughout the region.

The Oviedo Variant and the Camino Primitivo

In the town of Villaviciosa, a few kilometres before Gijon, the Northern Way turns inland and reaches Oviedo in just a few stages, where the Camino Primitivo begins. Like us, many other pilgrims chose to leave the Northern route and undertake the "original" path—the Primitivo.

There were two main reasons: first, for the beauty and distinctive character of this route, described by many as one of the finest, away from the coast and immersed among rolling hills and forests; second, and it's a need we recognised during our walk, to escape the crowds that thronged the Northern Way, which were simply too numerous for the available accommodation and facilities.

This journey became an opportunity to discover two sides of northern Spain—ocean and mountain.
