First Days on the Sanabrese Route
Green landscapes and mountain trails for the first days on the Sanabrese Route, an experience quite different from the Via de la Plata

I have now been walking the Sanabrese Route for four days; counting the Via de la Plata, I've covered 735 kilometres, with just 9 days remaining before arriving in Santiago de Compostela. Numbers that speak to both the physical challenge and the deep desire to reach the end.
Initially, the landscape blended with that of the Via de la Plata—from the gold of dry fields to the green of mountains drawing ever closer. Now I find myself completely immersed in that verdant embrace, just a step away from the stunning and enchanting region of Galicia.
During my first days on the Sanabrese Route, I've encountered noticeably more pilgrims compared to the Via de la Plata of recent weeks. Many choose to walk only this section, and even more opt to cycle it. Fortunately, I see more fellow pilgrims in the refugios, yet curiously, along the path itself, I continue to walk alone without crossing paths with anyone.
The intense heat of previous weeks has eased, and the dry climate is gradually giving way to something more humid and temperate. Village life becomes more vibrant, and in the afternoons I see many locals heading to lakes and rivers to cool off, taking advantage of the natural swimming pools formed in these water courses.
Practical Notes on the Sanabrese Route
The way-marking on the Sanabrese Route follows the same principles as the Via de la Plata: it's present but requires attention, particularly at junctions. In larger towns, trail markers can be scarce, so you're often forced to ask locals in advance which direction to take when leaving a settlement.
Regarding difficulty, I should highlight the presence of more elevation changes. During these initial days on the Sanabrese, the route ascends from 700m to peaks of 1000m, though fortunately with gradual, manageable climbs and descents. The cool forest air and altitude, combined with less asphalt underfoot, have helped me manage the exertion better and suffer less from heat-related fatigue in my feet and legs.
A wonderful route, this Sanabrese, quite different from the Via de la Plata yet equally inspiring and brimming with beautiful scenery and magnificent vistas. Reason enough to rise each morning and continue walking.
