That's 3,154 more pilgrims than the same month the previous year, 6,054 more than in 2014, and even 9,700 more than in 2013. These significant numbers demonstrate the steady and natural growth in the popularity and interest surrounding the Way of St. James over recent years—a trend that has little to do with 2016 being declared a Holy Year. Of course, many took advantage of the Jubilee to undertake the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, but it's unlikely this had a decisive impact on these figures.
The French Way remains the most popular route, accounting for over 65% of arrivals, while Sarría continues to hold its position as the most popular starting point for the final 100 kilometres, with nearly 9,000 pilgrims. Encouragingly, Saint Jean Pied de Port also saw a strong showing, with 6,246 departures.
The Portuguese Way, while nowhere near the French route's numbers, surpasses 17% of preferences with 6,908 pilgrims. Porto and Tui are the preferred starting cities; only 394 pilgrims began from Lisbon.
With percentages below 6%, the Northern Way and the Primitive Way follow, though both show growth compared to the previous month and year. Lower numbers appear on the Silver Route, likely due to the intense heat and unfavourable climatic conditions for this type of pilgrimage.
Spaniards rank first by nationality, but this time Italians take the prize among foreign pilgrims, with 3,747 walkers. Many take advantage of summer holidays to walk the Way of St. James, a journey that's becoming increasingly popular throughout Italy. Notably, nearly 800 pilgrims came from Australia.
It's disappointing to see how few pilgrims who reached Santiago continued on to Finisterre and Muxía. Despite its charm and evocative character, this route never attracts large numbers. Most pilgrims prefer to reach it by bus, perhaps due to time constraints or because they still regard it as an extension of the Way of St. James rather than a pilgrimage in its own right.
