The second stage of the Portuguese Coastal Camino, between the ocean and wooden boardwalks. 15km from Angeiras to Póvoa de Varzim, passing through Vila do Conde.

#Day2 Angeiras – Póvoa de Varzim 15km

The day begins tiring—not from the landscape, always spectacular, or the difficulty, which is non-existent—but from an utterly cold night spent practically shivering! The accommodation we were staying at had no heating whatsoever, so we "slept" fully clothed and fortunately bundled in a wool blanket over our sleeping bags. We set off already exhausted and desperately craving a hot shower and proper rest.

Today's goal is to reach Póvoa de Varzim, just 15km from Angeiras. We could certainly cover more ground, but there are no facilities until Esposende, a town about 20km beyond Póvoa. A 35km day would be too much for us right now, so we decide to stop early and savour this beautiful country a little longer.

We begin walking at around 8 in the morning. The dawn light, the roar of waves upon sand, and the interplay of shadows across the beach make us forget all our tiredness and drink in those moments of beauty and solitude that will never come again.

Imagining how it would be to walk this second stage of the Portuguese Coastal Camino in summer, we realise that, aside from the biting wind, we're truly blessed. It's wonderful to experience, even for just a few minutes, the solitude of a place—to feel special, as though those colours and shades of light were created exclusively for us, to enchant and seduce us.

Like the day before, we continue our walk on wooden boardwalks across the beach. We pass through Labruge, Praia de Moreiro, and arrive at Villa Chã, a small fishing village just before Vila do Conde. A group of fishermen stand in a row mending and untangling fishing nets they'll likely use for tonight's expedition at sea.

We turn the corner and see it. The skylines of Vila do Conde and Póvoa de Varzim are instantly recognisable and familiar. We visited both in 2016 during a trip to Portugal, and it's remarkable how they haven't changed a bit. The fortress overlooking the ocean, the magnificent medieval aqueduct, and the pretty fishing harbour of Póvoa all carry that comforting sense of the familiar.

The stage ends here at Póvoa de Varzim. Tomorrow awaits another 20km along the ocean's edge to Esposende, and we already know it will be fantastic!
