23 km from Porto to Angeiras for the first stage on the Portuguese Coastal Way, searching for the first yellow waymark.

#Day1 Porto – Angeiras 23 km

Dawn breaks. It sounds like we woke up incredibly early, but it's actually already nearly 8 in the morning! We quickly leave our hotel (there are no pilgrim hostels in Porto) and plunge into the city streets heading towards the Cathedral of Sé. Fortunately, there's barely anyone here yet, and we can enjoy this square and its views in complete peace.

With our rucksacks on our backs, trekking boots still rather stiff on our feet and credentials stamped the day before, we follow the first yellow waymark of the Portuguese Coastal Way—distinctive signage to avoid confusion with the "classic" route's markers.

Soon we realize we're heading in the wrong direction. The waymarks have led us along the inland route, but we're determined to walk the first stage along the coast. We abandon the markers and make our way to Ribeira, from where we begin to follow the course of the River Douro—staying on the roadside but on the pavement.

No waymarks for now. The river and then the ocean more than compensate for their absence. It's at Matosinhos (10 km) that we find the first yellow markers again.

No elevation gain, no difficulties or obstacles along the way. This opening stage of the Portuguese Coastal Way has all the makings of a beautiful and pleasant seafront walk. You see elderly people taking their morning stroll, couples holding hands, and runners sprinting along the promenade. The surroundings are absolutely lovely and well-maintained: attractive houses, some still adorned with traditional tiles, quiet roads, spacious pavements sometimes decorated with small gardens, and on the left, wide sandy beaches and a rather lively ocean.

We cross the drawbridge and soon reach the magnificent lighthouse (15 km)! Even the nearby refinery—vast but thoughtfully designed—doesn't spoil this landscape. From here on, we walk along long wooden boardwalks built on the beach. Comfortable, secure, and deeply enchanting, they eventually lead us to the small fishing village of Angeiras (23 km), where we decide to spend the night.

Dinner time is approaching and we're eager to try some local fish specialties! We take the opportunity to study tomorrow's stage... where will we go? Honestly, we don't know yet ourselves, but isn't that the beauty of the Camino?!
