1. Suitable Equipment

The most important thing before any hike is to get the right equipment for the journey you're about to undertake.

A good pair of hiking boots, appropriate clothing and a backpack of the right size will help you make the most of your day outdoors.

Choose the right footwear and clothing based on the season. Remember that movement helps you stay warm, so don't overdress and wear technical fabrics—you'll find them much more comfortable.

If it's summer and you're heading to the mountains, bring a lightweight fleece for early morning hours; and if the weather looks uncertain, pack a waterproof windbreaker so you're protected if conditions worsen.

2. Weather Check

Among the essential rules for hiking safely in the mountains is checking the weather conditions of the area. It may seem obvious, almost unnecessary, but it should be standard practice for anyone walking at high altitudes.

Here weather can change in a heartbeat, and paying attention to approaching clouds or rising wind could save you from dangerous situations, especially if you're far from a mountain hut or still have several hours to get back. Please, never take unnecessary risks.

3. Respect for Nature

rispetto-della-naturaRespecting nature is the golden rule if you decide to spend your time within it.

Those who walk through forests, across mountain peaks, or along the coast, perhaps in protected marine areas, do so to enjoy not only beautiful landscapes, but above all to immerse themselves in nature. It should therefore be natural to show respect for the places that welcome us, the animals that inhabit them, and the people who will want to benefit from them after us.

Unfortunately, not everyone who visits these places respects nature. I know it's inexplicable, but how many times have we witnessed it. I know you're not one of them, but it's always worth remembering.

If you love walking in nature, if you truly care for it, then respect it as you would your own home or someone dear to you.

4. Take Your Rubbish With You

Often during our hikes we find various types of rubbish along the trails—empty water bottles, tissues, or that dog waste bag you picked up but didn't carry with you. So how should you behave during a hiking excursion?

The simplest thing to do is carry an empty bag in your backpack to collect all your waste, both organic and non-organic. And why not, perhaps you could also pick up some rubbish left behind by others—a gesture of both civility and love and respect for nature.

At the end of your hike you'll find bins in the car parks where you can sort everything. And if there aren't any, well, it wouldn't be a problem to take them home with you, would it?!

Let's leave the trail better than we found it.

5. Respect for Others

We increasingly come across the "weekend hikers," which is why we're creating this guide on how to behave during a hiking excursion.

Going to the mountains, and especially walking, can improve your relationship with yourself and with others.

Respect the people you meet by exchanging greetings, practising courtesy, and offering to help anyone in difficulty. These are habits we should have every day but often forget to practise; let's try to do it at least here.

6. Walk in Silence

If you can't stay quiet, at least lower your voice!!!

It may sound like a rebuke, but you can't imagine how much loud talking annoys people in the quiet of the woods.

Most people who venture into forests and trails do so to reconnect with nature and themselves, and hearing constant chatter in the absolute silence is nerve-racking.

It's like being in bed at night, exhausted, trying to fall asleep while someone talks loudly outside your window. Has that ever happened to you?

So next time you're on a hike, instead of chatting the whole time, listen to the sounds of nature—they'll help you enjoy your day even more.

7. Ideal Companions

come comportarsi durante un'escursione a piediWalking alone is truly pleasurable, almost intimate, but doing it with the right people can be an even more fulfilling experience.

The ideal companion could be your faithful friend, but especially the person you care most about.

Walking together is an experience that deepens connection, helping to strengthen that powerful bond between you, where often no words are needed to understand one another.

Sharing the wonders that nature offers creates complicity; all your senses are active, all emotions are listening, everything is connected.

But remember, always maintain your own pace! If the company is right, they'll understand that it's not healthy to rush your rhythm and speed up, first because it could strain your body, and second because you wouldn't fully enjoy the beautiful day.

8. Talk With Local People

Travelling, and especially walking, means opening yourself to the other, to the new, immersing yourself in the place where you are. How can we best get to know a place if not by talking with the local people? Approach them, exchange greetings and maybe have a chat and get to know each other better.

Let them tell you the stories of the place. In every location you'll always find someone, perhaps a bit older, eager to share their adventures: not only would we learn more about their history, but we'd give them some of our time, which is truly important to them.

9. Savour the Local Cuisine

A 19th-century philosopher said "We are what we eat." And it's true—food and drink express every aspect of a person's life and, even more so, that of a community.

Everything revolves around gastronomy: the history, culture and traditions of a people are forged by their surrounding environment, shaped by the lands they cultivate, the animals they raise, the herbs they gather. Tasting typical dishes will become a delicious way to discover the places of your hikes in even greater depth.

10. Check the Difficulty Level of Your Route

Checking the hiking difficulty level of the route you'll be taking is one of the key factors in understanding how to behave during a hiking excursion, because it allows you to plan your day better.

It prepares you mentally for the effort you'll need to make during your walk in the mountains, by the sea, or wherever your hike takes you.

Choosing a route suited to your fitness level will help make your day unforgettable.

So what are you waiting for—plan your next hike and have a wonderful time.
