A significant portion of arrivals came from Spanish pilgrims, accounting for 39% and nearly 16,000 arrivals in Santiago, making Spain the leading nationality on the Camino. These figures only include those who registered their credentials at the Pilgrim Welcome Office.
This means the actual number of walkers is considerably higher, as many complete intermediate sections of the route. It's common practice in Spain to divide the pilgrimage into shorter segments, often dedicating just 3-4 days at a time.
Alongside Spanish pilgrims, September 2016 arrivals included 61% international visitors. Germans were particularly well represented, with just over 3,308 Italians completing the journey. US pilgrims were also prominent, representing nearly 10% of total arrivals. Portuguese, Irish, French, Polish and British walkers rounded out the top eight nationalities.
Popular Starting Points
Sarria remained the top departure city for Spanish pilgrims. After Saint Jean Pied de Port, León ranks as the third most popular starting point for the French Way.
Porto and Tui remain the preferred starting cities for the Portuguese Way, overshadowing Lisbon once again. On the English Way, an overwhelming 1,233 of 1,253 pilgrims chose to depart from Ferrol.
Overall, the data reveals minor fluctuations, but the general trend remains remarkably consistent year after year.
A Fascinating Detail About September 2016 Arrivals
Among the extensive data compiled by the Pilgrim Welcome Office, one intriguing detail emerged regarding departure points. An impressive 400 pilgrims started their journey directly from their home country. Among these, 5 began from Rome and 7 from Paris.
The highest numbers came from 101 Germans and 92 Dutch pilgrims. France, Belgium, Austria, Switzerland, Poland, United Kingdom and Czech Republic also had notable representations. 13 pilgrims departed from Italy. Could any of you have been among them?!
