When to Book Your Walking Holiday: The Perfect Timing
After months of restrictions and uncertainty, travellers are rediscovering the freedom of the open road. Learn the best time to plan your next walking adventure and secure unforgettable pilgrimage experiences.
A Piedi Per Il Mondo

The desire to travel is strong, and this is causing many hotels, guesthouses and B&Bs in popular destinations to be fully booked weeks in advance.
Most people plan their holidays several months ahead, while many others, due to indecision, limited time off, or uncertainty, book their holidays at the last minute.
Those who book several months in advance do so to secure a quality hotel, to choose their preferred travel dates, and to travel in line with their standards.
For the last-minute traveller, however, what matters is the destination itself, the journey's goal.
When choosing very popular destinations, you risk:
- Not finding accommodation
- Having to settle for what's available
- Spending much more for significantly lower quality
Usually what remains available in a highly sought-after destination is what everyone else who has already booked has rejected.
To give an example, if you try to book a holiday in the Maldives six months from now, it will certainly cost you far less with a better hotel compared to booking for next week. Unless you find an incredible last-minute deal, which can happen with this type of travel.
We often think on a small scale, so we tell ourselves "well yes, the Maldives are so vast, I'll find a place" but we don't account for the hundreds, if not thousands, of people from around the world booking for that destination every single day.
But what do the Maldives have to do with A piedi per il mondo?
Here's where I'm going with this!
We often assume that the walking routes and treks found around the world have facilities that can accommodate hundreds of people, and in some cases, especially abroad, this reflects reality (see the Camino de Santiago). In Italy, however, the number of available beds on walking routes and treks is very limited and often of poor quality.
And it happens that in some locations, with few lodging options available, you'll pay for a room in a 1970s hotel that's never been renovated as much as you would for a Boutique Hotel in central Paris.
This naturally applies whether you rely on a travel agency like ours or organise your trip yourself.
At the moment I'm writing this, destinations like the Camino de Santiago (and some locations have over 2,000 beds) are nearly fully booked for almost every day through the end of October.
This is even more true for some Italian walking routes and treks, which, despite being heavily promoted, are often lacking adequate facilities for tourist circuits.
Our advice is always to book many weeks in advance, so that your A piedi per il mondo travel consultant can always choose the best for you.
.. and if you book last-minute and don't find what you'd like?! .. you'll know we've done everything possible to give you the best.
Happy travels!
