Many pilgrims have walked the Spanish trails. A total of 53,712 arrivals in Santiago during August—a number below expectations.

Today the Oficina de acogida al peregrino released figures for arrivals at Santiago in August: 53,712 pilgrims, 1,084 fewer than the same period last year. This is a telling statistic for those of us who anticipated a surge in visitor numbers, especially considering it was August.

Not that 50,000 people in a month is insignificant, but given that it was a Holy Year of Mercy and the Way of St. James generated considerable publicity, many expected higher numbers. Personally, I believe the thriving Italian pilgrimage trails, particularly the Via Francigena, drew significant numbers away (though I don't yet have confirmed data on this).

A closer look at Santiago arrivals data for August 2016

The Spanish, representing nearly 60%, remain the most dedicated pilgrims on the Way of St. James; those from Andalusia and Madrid are the most frequent walkers.

Among international pilgrims, Italians lead with 15%, followed by Germans and Portuguese. Notably, there was a significant presence of Polish walkers, previously seen in minimal numbers.

Once again, Sarria holds the distinction as the most popular departure point for the Way. Tui follows closely, and together they account for nearly 19,000 arrivals. The final 100km continue to win out, often at the expense of a more authentic and deeper experience—certainly much longer than a week-long walk. On the French Way, nearly one in two pilgrims depart from Sarria; the same applies to the Portuguese Way from Tui.

August's arrival statistics therefore reveal a consistent pattern—while the numbers fluctuate, the percentages remain largely unchanged. Fewer women than men, a high number of cyclists during summer months, very few horse riders, and many setting out on foot directly from their home countries, including 82 people from Germany and 75 from the Netherlands.

We await next month's data for a full assessment of the summer season on the Way of St. James.
