The Cammino Francescano della Marca is a 167km trail that winds through two of Italy's most beautiful regions, Umbria and the Marches. It was created with the ambition to retrace, as faithfully as possible, the steps that in 1215 led Saint Francis from the city of Assisi to Ascoli Piceno.
The Cammino Francescano della Marca: Essential Information
The timeless figure of Saint Francis and the historical significance of this pilgrimage route attract walkers of every kind—from devotional pilgrims to casual wanderers eager to discover another magnificent corner of Italy on foot. But what draws travellers isn't just the history and spirituality of these places; they're equally captivated by the extraordinary artistic and cultural heritage, the exceptional food and wine traditions, and the stunning natural landscape.
The Cammino Francescano della Marca can be walked in either direction, starting from Assisi or ending there. The route we describe here begins in Assisi and concludes in Ascoli Piceno, both for historical authenticity and to serve those who have reached Assisi from Rome or La Verna on the Via di Francesco and wish to continue their journey.
The Cammino Francescano della Marca coincides with the Via Lauretana for nearly half its length, then diverges at Pievefavera: from here the former heads south while the latter continues east.
The Via Lauretana deserves mention: it's an emerging pilgrimage route in the early stages of institutionalisation, with Loreto as its final destination. Loreto is one of Europe's most significant Marian pilgrimage sites, home to the Holy House of Mary. Within the next couple of years, it should become a fully developed and accessible walking route for everyone.
Difficulty Level of the Cammino Francescano della Marca
The Cammino Francescano della Marca is a moderately challenging trail, rated T/E on the hiking difficulty scale, making it suitable for those who aren't highly trained—whether you enjoy occasional mountain rambles or regularly walk a few kilometres to stay fit.
The route comprises 8 stages ranging from 15km to 27km in length. While daily elevation gain and loss typically exceed 1,000 metres, the moderate stage lengths help distribute the effort. That said, with nearly 170km to cover, pre-walk training is advisable to arrive properly prepared.
Another factor to consider is your pack weight, which will range from 6kg to 10kg depending on the season and your packing skills. Fortunately, with bars and supermarkets available at every stage endpoint, you won't need to carry large food and water supplies.
