Perhaps you're setting out on your journey to escape from something, or conversely, to discover new horizons—maybe you're not even entirely sure why, but you feel a compelling pull within you: quite possibly, even if you're not fully aware of it, you're simply seeking your own path to self-realisation, as we all are.
Psychologists and philosophers agree that self-realisation is one of the fundamental human needs.
This means that every person carries within them a drive toward the most complete and authentic expression of their true nature—that genuine part of ourselves, unbound by the fears, shame, and emotional wounds that accumulate over time.
To ignore this inner calling means surrendering to dissatisfaction and malaise, whereas embracing this need for self-expression is the first step toward embarking on the path that leads to happiness.
But how can we learn to choose for ourselves with confidence, without being swayed by destructive habits or negative thinking? How can we avoid falling into the trap of guilt, justification, and resistance, or being influenced by external pressures?
By practising self-governance—the capacity to be proactive and the author of our own lives—starting by developing or strengthening our autonomy and self-determination.
To do this, we can draw upon three human faculties that we already possess and use naturally, paying them greater attention to exercise and strengthen them with purpose and commitment.
Desire
It's crucial to learn how to desire, distinguishing between what is an opportunity—something within our control—and what is merely a possibility, dependent on external circumstances or others' responses. Focus primarily on the former.
Our desires represent our greatest energy and life force, yet they often remain mere ideas, dreams, and fantasies, never taking concrete form. However, they can become achievable if we transform them into measurable goals that are within our control.
Begin shifting your focus from what you cannot do—avoiding disappointment and frustration in the process—to what truly lies within your power. In this way, you might discover that the magic wand isn't quite so elusive after all.
Think
Once you've clarified your desire, you need to think and reflect to develop an objective that is both possible and concrete—rich in detail, aligned with your core principles and values, and suited to your abilities and skills.
During this phase, discussion with others can be invaluable, as it stimulates critical thinking and analysis about the true feasibility of your project.
It's therefore essential to create an action plan with specific milestones, considering which steps to take, how to take them, and what effort is required. This preparation is fundamental to avoid overburdening yourself with unrealistic expectations and to ready yourself properly.
Act
Finally, of course, you must act and put your plan into practice—but start small, doing only what is genuinely achievable in your current time and place. When something isn't ready or feasible, it's better to wait and focus on other things.
Keep your plan and its potential shortcomings in mind, and be prepared to adjust or modify it when something doesn't work exactly as intended. Moreover, constant evaluation of your interim results is essential so you can fine-tune your programme wherever necessary.
Epicurus believed that human unhappiness stems from fearing what need not be feared and desiring what is unnecessary to desire. This is why it's vital to use your faculties wisely, without being pulled astray by ego, envy, or suffering.
