Finding Your Way or Getting Lost? The Path to Self-Discovery

The arrow is one of the most important symbols of the Way and, in general, a fundamental element for all routes walked by pilgrims and trekkers. It is what indicates the right direction to take in order not to get lost and to face all the stages necessary to reach your desired destination without difficulty.

On the road to Santiago, for example, the first sections to be marked were those leading to O Cebreiro and its ancient church. The famous flecha amarilla, in fact, was born from an idea by Don Elías Valiña, the parish priest of the small village, who decided to use a bucket of yellow paint abandoned by workers carrying out road works to make the directions to the Cathedral more visible. Following this brilliant idea, between the late 1970s and early 1980s, all the other sections and routes were standardized thanks to the contribution of volunteer associations who understood the importance of this act of support.

On the Via Francigena, on the other hand, a white and red small flag with a little pilgrim at its centre is used, and on the CAI trails the same colours are adopted, while in other places green symbols are used, sometimes painted on wood and trees, others on plastic and metal supports, or designs and sculptures are created with stones.

Walking on the right path

Every road has its markers, constant reference points that guide wanderers to discover new places and reassure them during their journey. Sometimes you may have some difficulty recognizing them, hidden among the leaves or barely marked on the walls of abandoned houses, but the more you progress and become familiar with them, the more you are able to spot them even from a distance.

A well-marked route allows us to walk on the right path, to experience the journey with greater peace of mind, leaving little room for concerns. Facing a fork in the road or in the darkness of an early morning, the certainty of encountering an arrow puts us in a position to embark on the journey with confidence, even without the help of a guide or a map.

It's a bit like what happens when we recognize our own potential and believe in ourselves, when we are centred and listen to our aspirations, the direction to take becomes immediately clear. Our values become the inner arrow that shows us which path to take to reach a goal or pursue a dream. So, over time, it can also happen that we develop a certain intuition that helps us take the safe path even without seeing any indication, confident in our own abilities and naturally oriented towards our own destiny.

Getting lost on the journey

Every time we encounter an arrow, we are certain of which way to take, but at the same time, that symbol poses a question to us: do you want to continue the journey? Do you want to follow the marked path? Or do you want to stop, take an alternative, unknown route?

Arrows leave us room to reflect, to imagine, to turn our attention away from the path, but they also put us in contact with our weaknesses and insecurities, with the fear of getting lost.

And sometimes it really does happen that we take the wrong path and lose our way, because we were too distracted or because we didn't notice the warning, and at that point, once again the questions arise: what to do? How to proceed? Perhaps it's better to turn back?

We usually walk looking for clearly visible indications because they give us security and allow us to avoid situations that could put us in difficulty, such as finding ourselves in the middle of a forest or in a place surrounded by emptiness, but in reality, this is not always possible. The wonder of life is that when we feel lost, if we listen and pay attention, we can notice that there are signs, perhaps more hidden, but very revealing, that are always around us to give meaning to what happens to us and to show us the path to follow.
