The Way of Saint James is not merely a journey, but an experience that profoundly transforms those who walk it. Over the years, millions of pilgrims have undertaken this path for religious, spiritual, cultural, and personal reasons.

The Compostela, the certificate that certifies pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, has always represented an important recognition, but it should not become the sole objective for those embarking on this adventure. At A Piedi Per Il Mondo, we believe the true value of the Way is far deeper than any certificate.

Recently, the International Pilgrim Reception Centre introduced new rules for issuing the Compostela, with the aim of ensuring requirements are met rigorously. In this article, we analyse these changes, their impact on pilgrims, and why the Way of Saint James is an experience that transcends any certificate.

New requirements for obtaining the Compostela

To receive the Compostela, pilgrims must meet certain criteria, which have now been more clearly defined to prevent abuse and ensure the authenticity of the journey.

1. Pilgrimage on foot or horseback

  • The pilgrim must cover at least 100 km consecutively along a single official route recognised by the International Pilgrim Reception Centre's computer system.
  • The path must always be in the direction of Santiago.
  • The final stage must depart at least from the location immediately before arrival at the Cathedral.
  • For those starting outside Spain on an official itinerary, a minimum of 70 km consecutively in Spanish territory is required.

2. Pilgrimage by bicycle

  • The distance required to obtain the Compostela by bicycle is at least 200 km, with the same rules applied to walking pilgrims.

3. Pilgrimage by sailboat

  • A journey of at least 100 nautical miles is required, followed by a walking route from the last disembarkation port to Santiago.
  • During the land section, the pilgrim must collect stamps on the credential for each stage completed.

4. Special circumstances

The Cathedral Chapter reserves the right to grant the Compostela to people with particular needs. Those falling into this category must contact the International Pilgrim Reception Centre in advance for assessment.

The Way of Saint James: an experience beyond the Compostela

Many pilgrims approach the Way with the idea of obtaining the Compostela, but reducing this experience to a certificate would be a mistake. The Way of Saint James is an inner journey, a moment of personal growth, discovery, and connection with nature and oneself.

Those who walk the Way with only the goal of obtaining the certificate risk missing the authentic value of this experience. At A Piedi Per Il Mondo, drawing on our experience and deep knowledge of pilgrimage routes, we create personalised itineraries that put the journey itself at the centre, not just the destination.
