Walking enthusiasts typically greet the arrival of summer with great joy and excitement. While wandering and trekking in winter can be equally rewarding, the warm season offers more opportunities and possibilities accessible to everyone.
To make the most of it, it's wise to heed a few important considerations. Here are 10 tips for summer walking.
1. Choose a route that suits you
Summer offers abundant possibilities. With longer daylight hours and inviting weather, you're encouraged to venture outdoors and explore: mountains, seaside, or lakeside destinations are all within reach. Local associations, hiking clubs, and tourism boards often organise guided walks and events.
You'll have no trouble finding a route suited to your level and interests. However, despite your enthusiasm, approach with care. High-altitude treks, while refreshing and invigorating, require careful planning and adequate fitness, so check difficulty ratings and distances beforehand, and don't overextend yourself. There are many fascinating coastal paths too, but be prepared for intense heat and remember you'll need to return to your starting point.
2. Keep an eye on the weather
Factor in your walking pace, but don't ignore the forecast before setting out. While summer weather is generally more favourable than winter conditions, don't underestimate extreme temperatures, sudden storms, or rapid temperature swings that mountain areas can bring—including fog and rockfall risks.
One crucial safety note: if you find yourself in lightning storms, avoid exposed areas or solitary trees, via ferrata routes, ridgelines, and mountain peaks. Stay clear of watercourses and don't use your mobile phone. When storms strike suddenly, seek immediate shelter in a cave or refuge.
3. Make the most of the entire day
You might not relish early mornings even during your leisure time, but summer walking is ideal for harnessing your body's energy and aligning with the sun, which graces us with over 15 hours of daylight.
The tip is simple: rise at dawn and return at dusk, avoiding the midday heat between roughly 11am and 3pm. This allows you to appreciate the landscapes and colours that summer light offers while maintaining a gentle, relaxed pace.
4. Protect yourself from sun and temperature fluctuations
Regardless of destination, protect yourself with a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen. Dress in layers—the "onion" method works well, especially in mountains. Temperature drops 6-7°C per 1,000 metres of elevation gain, so pack a windproof, waterproof jacket and extra clothing, plus a towel.
Always wear appropriate footwear for your terrain—ideally with good grip, breathability, and proper fit: not too loose to avoid slipping, not too tight to prevent blisters.
5. Drink plenty of water
Staying hydrated is essential for summer walking, preventing muscle cramps and circulation problems from dehydration. Proper hydration maintains your body's vital functions, especially during physical exertion in heat.
Always carry a full water bottle—or two—refilling along the way. If you sweat heavily, bring electrolyte supplements and mineral salts.
6. Cool your wrists and neck—or take a dip
When the sun becomes unbearable, refresh your body by splashing water on your wrists and neck, or if possible, jump into a river or the sea.
If you're walking near the beach, remember that wading through water is excellent exercise and provides relief, particularly for those with circulation issues, promoting overall relaxation and wellbeing.
7. Breathe
Take breaks whenever you need to, without worrying about those ahead or moving faster. Pausing to recover and breathe is essential to avoid overexertion and provides a perfect opportunity to chat with companions or, conversely, to meditate in the shade of a tree.
8. Listen to your body
Pay attention to what your body is telling you. Despite all precautions, heat stroke, dizziness, muscle cramps, or headaches can still occur. Never dismiss any discomfort.
9. Treat your palate
Make the most of local gastronomic treasures and combine your trek with a culinary experience, adding another dimension to wellness and enjoyment.
Consider walking the Alpine Pasture Trails and sampling authentic alpine specialities, or opt for coastal paths leading to seaside taverns. Just remember not to overeat, as you'll have more walking ahead of you!
10. Embrace the unexpected
After following all these tips, leave room for chance, as you naturally would in life.
Let curiosity guide you and keep your eyes wide open for the unexpected. Perhaps a passing shower to dance and sing in, a fleeting rainbow to chase, or an unplanned detour to explore.
