Why Paper Guidebooks Still Matter for Slow Travelers

Paper guidebooks may seem outdated in the age of smartphones and GPS, yet experienced walkers and pilgrims know their true value. A well-crafted guide written by seasoned travelers offers insights, context, and reliability that no digital screen can fully replicate.

Why Paper Guidebooks Still Matter for Slow Travelers

We've all owned a printed travel guide at some point—whether as a gift, a purchase, or borrowed from a friend. They're familiar to us all. But we also know how quickly the information in them becomes outdated: venues closing, prices that no longer match reality, or public transport systems that have changed.

Not to mention they often miss new attractions and points of interest that emerge after the guide goes to print.

The cost and weight of guidebooks can be a real drawback. Who wants to carry around a 600-page printed guide to Rome?

We'll try to answer the question you're probably asking yourself:

Why buy a travel guide when we have Google?

Perhaps you're wondering who needs a printed travel guide when you have a smartphone with internet access, right? Let us set the record straight (or at least partially) and explain why traditional travel guides remain an excellent resource when visiting a new destination.

Some travel guides are timeless. Monuments don't expire. Languages stay the same. Neither do distances. Sure, prices may become outdated, but everything else endures.

I don't know about you, but when I search for a recipe online, I often have to scroll through what feels like miles of content just to find it, because the author decided to share endless stories about chicken, the complete history of onions, or a 900-page memoir about their childhood memories connected to that recipe.

Fine, wonderful really, but I just need the actual recipe (and many times we're searching while the sauce is burning on the stove!)

Travel information works exactly the same way.

Sometimes we need simple answers—straightforward yes-or-no questions about doubts that arise when you're on the ground, and searching Google takes forever because the articles go completely off-topic.

Sometimes your phone has no signal, and other times you can't rely on your battery level. That's when having a printed guide at hand becomes an excellent backup option.

A small, lifesaving book you can turn to when questions arise or you're unsure.

Many guides become obsolete quickly because they dedicate significant content to recommending places to eat or sleep, which is fine, but sometimes we're looking for different information—an alternative or something more practical.

Our Camino de Santiago travel guides, for example, are compact yet contain all the information you need to reach the Plaza del Obradoiro by completing the final 100 km of the Camino de Santiago from Sarria.

Clear, concise information covering stages, hostels, distances, maps… plus practical tips on packing the perfect backpack and Galician phrases you'll definitely hear during your adventure.

And if you need more information about the Camino, we also offer a more comprehensive guide covering all the different routes to Santiago with much more detailed information, practical advice on resupply options, and the best times to travel.

After this brief commercial moment, let's continue.

One thing I often hear when I travel with friends and pull out my beautiful printed guide is "but what will you do with that, won't it get wet?" And yes, of course it can get wet, fall off a cliff, or suffer irreparable damage that prevents me from reading it, but here's a secret? Your smartphone can too.

We assume phones are indestructible (until of course they stop working, lose connection, get damaged from impact and become useless, or we leave them in a bar or on the train).

There's no damage a printed travel guide can suffer that a mobile phone can't also experience.

Besides, if I'm going to lose something, I'd rather it be the guidebook!

The Internet: A Breeding Ground for Self-Proclaimed Experts

We're accustomed to believing almost anything. I'm not the one saying this—research shows it's increasingly difficult to distinguish truth from fiction. The arrival of artificial intelligence in our lives has only made everything more complicated, and on the internet, anything goes.

Today, anyone can express an opinion on something and make that opinion seem like absolute truth, for any reason whatsoever. Similarly, it's easy for someone to declare themselves an expert on something they barely understand.

Can anyone write a travel guide? Yes and no.

There are thousands of people and influencers who sell their opinions as if they were gospel, in travel and every other field. Having many opinions doesn't make you an expert.

The work behind those opinions is what sets someone apart—that's what makes you truly knowledgeable.

Unfortunately, sometimes hidden behind so many opinions and personal experiences is just a diary. "Dear diary, today I was in Ireland and blah blah blah" and a single isolated experience doesn't make you an expert in anything.

(Unlike us, who definitely know what we're talking about!)

Guides: A Timeless Keepsake

Another compelling reason to purchase a travel guide is undoubtedly nostalgia and memory. Buying a guide is like suddenly finding a photo from a trip you thought you'd "forgotten."

Simply glancing at it transports you back to all those places you've been and reminds you of all the wonderful moments you experienced at that destination. It doesn't matter if you never actually use it—we don't look at all our travel photos every day.

It's an additional memory, a permanent link to a specific moment in time, a sort of collection.

Imagine filling a shelf with travel guides (from trips you've actually taken, not just for decoration, though that's valid too!) It would mean you've truly maximised life.

If some people get tattoos to remember the places they visit, why not buy and collect travel guides? Both are ways to remember something permanently!

At A piedi per il mondo, we love walking travel and we know exactly what you need when starting your adventure. We understand your doubts and fears, and what information truly matters.

That's why our travel guides are concise and to the point (not just us saying so—our 350+ Amazon reviews prove it) and we guarantee you'll find relevant, useful, and timeless information.

And if you decide to travel with us on foot and have any questions, remember our experts are here to help with everything you need and resolve all your doubts!

Thank you for reading, and remember: keep collecting guides and keep travelling far and wide!
