First and foremost, be aware that you don't need to take six million photos. It's equally important to remember to fully enjoy the journey and, sometimes, allow yourself to go without the camera.
After all, unless photography is your profession, the main purpose of travel isn't to create an extensive photographic report.
On many occasions, especially when we travel on foot through nature, everything seems worthy of being captured with the camera, and if it were up to me, I'd do it.
Everything seems incredible to me! But sometimes the difference between an ordinary photo and one worthy of National Geographic is, for example, a matter of light. Opt for capturing moments and places that truly fascinate you.
Before picking up the camera, observe carefully, and if the moment deserves it, take a shot. There's no need to fill your album with thousands of photos; resist the temptation to document everything!
Lighting tricks

- Take advantage of the "Golden Hour": Capturing a perfect photo in nature often depends on light. The hour just after sunrise and before sunset offers soft, warm light that can make your photos incredible and help you achieve that perfect nature shot.
If you're passionate about coastal areas, on our Lighthouse Trail in Galicia you'll have the opportunity to capture stunning photos, as well as on the coastal routes of Portugal.
- Avoid Direct Sunlight: Very important. If you're taking photos during the day, try to avoid direct sunlight, as it can cause harsh shadows and overexposure. Look for natural shade or use a diffuser to soften the light (for example, an umbrella).
- Use Backlighting Creatively: Experiment with backlit photos to create well-defined silhouettes or highlight the contours of what you're trying to photograph.
Framing tricks

- The Rule of Thirds: Achieving a perfect photo in nature starts by internalising this simple rule. Mentally divide your frame into nine equal sections and place your main subject at one of the intersection points.
This creates a visually appealing composition so you'll find yourself thinking "what a well-executed photo!" You can practice this rule on our trails in France.
- Unique Perspectives: Don't be afraid to crouch down, climb up on something, or change your angle to get a unique and different perspective! For example, on the GR21 in Normandy, you'll have the opportunity to play with unique perspectives.
- Include Foreground Elements: Adding foreground elements can give depth to your photos and make the viewer feel more involved in the scene. A drop of water on the tip of a leaf is one of the clearest examples of a nature photo.
Other tips

- Capture Spontaneous Moments: Some of the best photos are those that capture spontaneous moments. Keep your camera ready and be observant, but don't obsess! It's easier to capture these moments when you're surrounded by people. If you want to explore the perfect combination of travelling through nature while having company, we recommend walking the Camino de Santiago.
- Experiment with Editing: After taking the photo, experiment with editing to enhance colours, adjust exposure, and improve sharpness. There are many editing apps and software available for this.
- Phone Timer: A camera remote is the perfect accessory. Try to practise with it at home so you know how to position it quickly and get good shots.
- Selfie Stick: Even though they don't seem as popular as they were a few years ago, the selfie stick is the perfect accessory for allowing solo travellers to photograph themselves at the most iconic locations in a city without having to rely on a kind-hearted tourist to help you.
- Be Patient: Sometimes, waiting for the right moment can make the difference between an ordinary photo and an extraordinary one. Have patience and take your time to compose the perfect image.
- Ask for Help: If you feel you need an extra hand, don't hesitate to ask strangers for help.
Most tourists have no problem helping you take a photo. We don't always manage to get what we're looking for with a selfie stick since we need photos taken from a greater distance than what these provide.
Practice, practice and practice. Nobody is born knowing, and photography is a discipline that requires training. You'll see that as you take more and more photos in nature (or in any environment), you'll learn to spot your mistakes and know how to fix them yourself.
Remember that achieving the perfect photo in nature is a subjective art, so have fun experimenting and you'll find your own unique style.
At A piedi per il mondo we can help you organise your perfect walking journey and return home with a camera full of incredible photos taken in nature, which will be the envy of your acquaintances and excellent images to use as wallpapers on your various devices 😉
