Traveling on public transport with your dog is a right guaranteed, in theory, to all owners with up-to-date health certificates, vaccination records, a muzzle, waste bags, and sometimes a certificate of good conduct.
Traveling with your dog on public transport means you can take him with you by train, plane, ferry, cruise ship, or bus — anywhere, without limitations.

Dogs on trains
Many people today use trains for their travels, whether on long-distance journeys or short routes, and often bring their four-legged companions along.
Traveling with your dog on public transport like trains is now heavily regulated, though rules vary depending on the train operator and region.
Railway companies don't discriminate based on dog size; they establish one simple rule:
- one dog per passenger
- use of a carrier when possible for dogs and cats
- a muzzle required for boarding and exiting
- purchase of a dog ticket (at a reduced price compared to human fares)
Trenitalia doesn't have dedicated carriages on Freccia high-speed trains for large dogs. On regional trains, dogs can board without issue provided travel is outside commuter hours — after 9:00 AM and before 5:00 PM.
Trenitalia permits large dogs to travel in overnight berths provided you book the entire berth exclusively, or allows them at the discretion of other passengers sharing the space if not exclusively booked.
Alternatively, your dog can travel in the corridor or passenger carriages with seating and tables. Tickets can be purchased at automated ticket machines in railway stations, at ticket offices in major stations, or through travel agencies.
Italo has dedicated carriages suitable for dogs on its long-distance trains — small-to-medium sized dogs in regular carriages and larger dogs in spacious dedicated areas. Dog tickets can be purchased through Italo's call center or booking platform using a credit card.

Dogs on ferries and cruise ships
Traveling with your dog on ferries or cruises in Italy has become increasingly common, and many prefer this option as it feels more reassuring for their dog than air travel uncertainty.
Dogs also require discounted tickets, and owners must comply with standard hygiene regulations (waste bags, parasite prevention, up-to-date health certificates with vaccination records).
Small dogs may travel in cages and stay in your cabin; however, in most cases, dogs travel inside parked vehicles or designated pet areas with owner access for care. Leash and muzzle are mandatory.
Traditional cruise companies do not permit dogs on board.
Some companies are increasingly opening to dog-friendly cruises. We recommend consulting your trusted travel agency to find the best pet-friendly option. Cunard and Hurtigruten offer cruise packages designed for traveling with dogs.
The cost of bringing your dog aboard varies by cruise line. Your dog must have:
- EU pet passport
- rabies vaccination
- microchip
- tapeworm prevention
Dogs on planes
Dogs, cats, and ferrets are permitted in airports.
Owners must follow standard care requirements, including:
- keeping your dog on a leash
- carrying a muzzle
- using waste bags
- complying with health regulations, with vaccinations and preventive treatments completed before airport access and boarding
Animals must be placed in an approved carrier for flight.
Some routes require transporting large dogs in cargo hold. Some airlines allow up to three dogs in the cabin.
Always consult your trusted veterinarian to determine if your dog can tolerate air travel, with its pressure changes and stressful conditions from transitions, unfamiliar environments, and new people.
Dogs on buses
Dogs on public transport primarily means bringing your four-legged friend on the bus.
Urban public transport is more challenging for large dogs. While small-to-medium dogs can be carried in arms or travel in carriers, large dogs depend on the driver's discretion for boarding.
Muzzles are standard in all transit company regulations, and typically no more than one dog per bus is permitted.
However, if your dog is large and the bus is crowded, the driver may refuse boarding to avoid disturbing other passengers.
Each European and non-European country has specific regulations for transporting dogs on public transit like buses and coaches, whether beside the owner or in storage compartments. We recommend checking with your local consulate and official websites of the country where you plan to travel with your dog, especially if your itinerary includes bus travel with Fido.
