Travelling with your dog is a unique adventure. To do it well, it's essential to stay informed and protect yourself. Because Fido is a companion, not a problem.

Many dream of walking the world with their dog. Perhaps stopping to camp somewhere under the stars, immersed in mountain fragrances and the peace of remote places.

From romantic imagination to making that dream a reality, there are important considerations to keep in mind before setting out on an adventure with your canine companion.

From my experience hiking with my Alaskan Malamute, I've learned to account for terrain (and potential hazards), climate, and my faithful friend's needs.

Rule No. 1: Protect Yourself First

I strongly recommend that you secure pet liability insurance to cover any damages your dog might cause to third parties, and accident and disability insurance for veterinary emergencies in both Italy and abroad, available 24/7. This protects you, your dog, and anyone you encounter throughout your travels.

Many assume dogs naturally regulate themselves when encountering other animals—but the reality is that the risk of bites to other dogs or people is always present, regardless of how friendly, well-trained, or sociable your dog is.

This first precaution will give you peace of mind during your outdoor adventures.

Rule No. 2: Keep Vaccinations Current

Your dog must be vaccinated according to the regulations of the countries you'll visit. I recommend obtaining a booster for tetanus and ensuring all standard vaccinations are up to date, just as you would before any international trip.

Check regulations regarding dogs in accommodations, mountain shelters, camping areas, and whether your dog can roam off-leash in specific locations.

Rule No. 3: Use a Lead, Even for Small Dogs

In protected areas, wildlife reserves, and national or regional parks, dogs should remain on a lead. I have an Alaskan Malamute and sometimes let him run free in nature on certain stretches.

This only happens when I know there are no hazards: unsupervised sheep herds or those guarded by livestock dogs are problematic for us because my dog has a strong predatory instinct toward sheep. On other routes, even without specific risks to manage, we walk together, him harnessed and tethered to my belt.

Rule No. 4: Pack Water for Two

When preparing your rucksack, study your route and the weather forecast: how much water will you need? Will you find natural water sources or must you carry bottles? These details make all the difference for safe trekking.

Will your route take you far from settlements and veterinary clinics? Don't forget a basic first aid kit for both you and your dog.

One more crucial point: research any snakes and processionary caterpillars you might encounter. Dogs, driven by curiosity, playfulness, or fear, may come into contact with them.

Do you know what to do if your dog is bitten by a viper on the nose or paw? Speak with your vet and learn proper procedures beforehand.

Walking the world with your dog is a magnificent adventure that will deepen your bond and transform your life, infusing your spirit with profound wellbeing. Happy trails!
