Just 50km from Bari, nestled beside the magnificent Gulf of Manfredonia, lies the charming coastal town of Trani. Narrow, atmospheric alleyways wind through the old town centre, which, steeped in rich medieval history, draws thousands of visitors every year.
Standing proudly on the waterfront, facing the small harbour, rises the magnificent Cathedral of Trani, another spectacular example of Puglian Romanesque architecture.
Built during the Norman reign starting in 1099, it was commissioned by Bishop Bisanzio following the death and canonisation of Saint Nicholas the Pilgrim. But who was this pilgrim named Nicholas?
Who Was Saint Nicholas the Pilgrim
First, the question we must ask is not who Saint Nicholas the Pilgrim was, but rather who he was to those around him! Three contemporary accounts describe him as a devout young man, generous, and of gentle manner.
Born in Greece and entering a monastery at just 12 years old, he arrived in Puglia before reaching his twentieth year, eager to make a pilgrimage to Rome. However, he stopped in Trani, where he quickly became known for his constant recitation of the Greek invocation "Lord, have mercy" and for always carrying a cross. Charitable to all, he caught the attention of Trani's bishop, Bisanzio, who immediately recognised divine inspiration in him.
Falling gravely ill, he died just days later. It was 2 June 1094.
Only four years later, during the Council of Bari in 1098, Nicholas was canonised by Pope Urban II. A year after that, in 1099, the Bishop of Trani began construction of the stunning cathedral we see today. With the relics of Saint Nicholas the Pilgrim brought here and enshrined in the crypt, countless miracles were said to follow.
An Overview of Trani Cathedral
Facing the plaza, on a small promontory overlooking the sea, Trani Cathedral dominates the town and enchants with its colours and forms. Its clean, soaring lines, combined with the white stone walls, give the building unique elegance, heightened by the magical atmosphere created by sunset colours or the city's night lighting.
Upon first sight of the cathedral, beyond the towering bell tower rising 59 metres constructed alongside it, we notice a double-flight staircase leading to the main entrance.

From the arches on the facade, we can deduce that a portico once ran along the entire length of the forecourt.
Beneath the stairs you can see another arched entrance. From here, you can access the lower Church of Santa Maria.
You should know that Trani Cathedral stands upon an earlier Early Christian structure dating to the 9th century dedicated to Santa Maria. Unfortunately, nothing you see dates from that era, as everything was rebuilt during the 12th century.
Thus, imagine the cathedral extending across two levels throughout most of its structure. Below, corresponding to the main body, lies the Church of Santa Maria, with three naves arranged over two rows of columns. Beneath the presbytery lies the crypt.
But let us proceed in order and examine this cathedral's beautiful facade.

The Cathedral's Facade and Portal
The simple and elegant facade of Trani Cathedral showcases two particularly noteworthy details. First, the magnificent central rose window. Then the portal, beautifully decorated and enriched with a bronze door of considerable artistic value.
To decorate the cathedral portal, the Bishop of Trani chose a central theme of Christianity: the Word Made Flesh, God's Son as the divine Word, testimony to the Father's love for all humanity.
A fundamental theme that found a point of connection with the city's Jewish community in its representation. The jambs were indeed carved with Old Testament imagery symbolising the Old Covenant between God and the chosen people through the patriarchs: the Sacrifice of Isaac, Jacob's Wrestling, and Jacob's Dream.
Opposite, on the right jamb, appear the prophets Jeremiah and Isaiah, symbols of the New Covenant.
On the bronze door, dating to the 12th century and the work of Barisano of Trani, 32 bronze reliefs depict the ultimate passage of the Word—its transmission. The coming of the Messiah is shown through images of his birth, death, and resurrection. The Apostles, spreading His Word, are followed by the Saints, whose lives bear witness to the Word. Among these appears Saint Nicholas the Pilgrim himself, standing before a kneeling Barisano.
For preservation purposes, the door at the cathedral entrance is a replica. The original is kept within the building itself.
The Cathedral Interior and Transept
Trani Cathedral's interior is defined by three naves, twelve pairs of columns, and an elegant gallery on the upper level. In the transept—the transverse corridor running between the presbytery and the naves—you can admire what remains of the floor mosaic. The two most striking images are Adam and Eve beneath the Tree of Knowledge, and Alexander the Great flying heavenward drawn by two griffins, both symbolising human pride.
The crypt, directly beneath the presbytery and accessed by a staircase, is unlike the crypts we typically encounter. Instead of a dark, enclosed space, we are welcomed into a large, bright room with high ceilings. Here rest the relics of Saint Nicholas the Pilgrim.
