The Legend of Puente del Diablo.

There is a tale told of a small pueblo in Barakalde, where in an ancient farmhouse lived a young and beautiful maiden of noble bearing, a devoted lover and woman of simple values.

On the opposite bank of the river that separated them lived a spirited young man, equally humble and cheerful, who fell deeply in love with the girl.
Each day the two lovers waded across the river on protruding rocks, risking their lives to see one another, and each morning the young woman would go to the chapel to pray to the Virgen de Argatan.

The two had promised to marry and had formalized their union with their families, yet due to their youth, they postponed the wedding according to their wishes.

But soon, an economic hardship befell one of the families, keeping the young couple apart. Gossip about the maiden sparked waves of jealousy in the young man. Comments questioning her virtue planted seeds of doubt that wounded his pride so deeply he could find no peace of mind.

And so he resolved to leave his pueblo, enlisting in the Christian army to escape as far as possible.

The young maiden learned of his departure for war and, fleeing her home at dusk, hurried toward her beloved.

But a violent storm caught her unaware. Wind, hail and torrential waters descended upon the land, and when she came to cross the river, she found herself unable to pass.

She fell to her knees on the riverbank, desperate and powerless, not knowing what to do.

It was then that night became day and the dark silhouette of a bearded man with long mustaches appeared before her, saying:

«Antes de que el gallo cante esta madrugada, puedo construir un puente a cambio de tu alma».

"Before the rooster crows at dawn, I can build you a bridge in exchange for your soul."

The maiden, her heart overflowing with love, did not hesitate for a moment to agree. But as she watched the bridge being constructed with no one building it, she understood that this figure was the devil himself.

Frightened and realizing her terrible mistake, she began to pray to the Virgen de Argatan of the Sanctuary of Begona. In that very instant, night turned to light and an old man with a long white beard appeared, presenting himself as San Jose.

The saint halted the devil's staff just in time, preventing him from placing the final stone, thus saving the maiden's soul.

The devil vanished, but the saint remained to complete the bridge and unite the two lovers.

The maiden crossed the bridge and ran toward her beloved. When he learned what she had risked to reach him, he realized his grave error and embraced her.

The young couple, reunited and overjoyed, went to the chapel where the maiden had prayed each morning, and there they exchanged their vows.

The bridge had been built. (Puente del Diablo)

Love had triumphed over evil once more, and they lived happily ever after.
