Week-long stage on the Portuguese Coastal Way heading towards Baiona and Ramallosa, a stage suspended between the ocean and eucalyptus forests.

#Day7 Mougás – Ramallosa 16km

[av_font_icon icon=’uea4f’ font=’fontello’ style=” caption=” link=” linktarget=” size=’30px’ position=’left’ color=” admin_preview_bg=”][/av_font_icon] Go to Stage 6

We woke up this morning in darkness. The sound of the waves is strong, but almost drowned out by the heavy patter of rain falling with great intensity. We take the opportunity to get some work done while we wait for daylight to break and, more importantly, for the rain to ease off.

Finally, at 9 o'clock we're ready to hit the road! Among all the pilgrims at the albergue – yesterday we were exceptionally 10 people – only we and another French couple set off on the trail.

Today we're taking it easy. We've decided to stop for the night in Ramallosa, just 16km from Mougás. The alternative would have been to walk another 20km to Vigo, a possibility we didn't even consider, especially given today's rain.

The stage begins with ocean views, skirting the road that leads to the lighthouse before Baiona. A group of women in wetsuits emerge from the cliff and make their way to cars parked along the road, carrying nets brimming with succulent goose barnacles (percebes). Women who with grace and steadfastness challenge the raw power and fierce intensity of the stormy sea, harvesting one of the world's most prized and sought-after crustaceans. If you come to Galicia, don't miss the chance to taste this exceptional seafood delicacy.

We soon leave the ocean behind to head inland. A beautiful climb begins, through forests and soft trails carpeted with lush green grass. A pathway of rocks, resembling an ancient Roman causeway (I'll look into this further), guides us almost all the way to Baiona. We enter the town through the narrow streets of its historic centre. We divert from the Way to see the sea and admire the beautiful fortification walls perched on the hillside more closely. We find ourselves in a stunning little bay, a small harbour with sandy beaches now occupied by seagulls.

Just 5km more and we reach Ramallosa, on the banks of the Miñor River. A beautifully preserved Roman bridge allows us to cross the river and arrive in the village. Shower, tapas, and then straight to bed!

Tomorrow it's Vigo, and we're confident it will bring another surprising stage.
