The Whispers Bench

Alameda Park in Santiago holds a secret.

A secret you'll only discover by sitting on it.

We're not joking, promise!

It's a 14-metre-long stone bench with truly remarkable acoustics.

Thanks to its concave shape and durable material, it creates a phenomenon known as the “whispering gallery”.

Sound emitted near its surface reflects along it, arriving clearly at any point, but barely perceptible if you step a few metres away from the bench.

In other words, two people seated at opposite ends can communicate through the bench.

A truly curious experience you must try!

Bonaval Cemetery

This cemetery has become a place for the living.

It ceased to be used for burial purposes in the mid-1960s, and today the niches remain sealed, transforming it into a recreational space for locals and visitors alike thanks to its expansive green areas.

You'll often see groups of friends, couples, and when the weather turns beautiful, people playing guitars!

Bescansa Pharmacy

This unique pharmacy, just five minutes from Plaza del Obradoiro, houses nearly two centuries of history. Located on the ground floor of an 18th-century building, it feels like stepping back in time.

A stunning carved wooden ceiling is framed in vibrant colours, surrounded by shelves decorated with botanical motifs and human details.

You can visit it, but don't linger too long! We don't want to disturb the customers 😉

Tourist Train

Yes, we know the tourist train appears in every Santiago guidebook, but a ride is truly worth your time.

Santiago has no tourist buses, but it does have two very special trains. One, painted white, takes you along the historic route of the city departing from Plaza del Obradoiro; the other, painted red, also departs from Plaza del Obradoiro, but takes you on a tour through the city's parks.

Both last approximately 45 minutes and pass through both the old and new quarters of the city.

A pleasant and comfortable way to discover Santiago de Compostela more thoroughly.

Monte Pedroso Viewpoint

Protected for years from new construction that might rival the cathedral in height or visibility, this viewpoint stands as the prime location to contemplate the city.

Visiting at any time is worthwhile, but at sunset it gains special magic, as the afternoon's last golden rays reflect off the cathedral.

You can reach it by car or on foot via a pleasant walk of about 45 minutes starting from Galeras Park.

Santiago University Natural History Museum

And just ten minutes from the aforementioned Galeras Park lies the Natural History Museum, one of those hidden treasures that even many Compostelans haven't visited.

Located within Vista Alegre Park and surrounded by nature, this museum is a delight to visit for both children and adults.

It houses valuable collections of plants, animals, and minerals, assembled by local professors and scientists, as well as through donations and exchanges.

The Donuts of the City of Culture

Located on Monte Gaiás, the City of Culture is an architectural complex with striking forms, inaugurated in 2011 and designed as a multidisciplinary space to host exhibitions and activities.

It combines administrative buildings with public-facing facilities, including museums and both temporary and permanent art exhibitions.

Some of these exhibitions adorn the outdoor spaces, which also feature gardens, a woodland area, a lake, recreational zones, and playgrounds.

Here you'll find The Donuts, created by artist Manolo Paz.

These are rounded stone figures, shaped like doughnuts, each weighing twelve tonnes, from whose centre you can enjoy a unique panoramic view of the city.

And why not take a great photo while you're at it!

Mythological Figures of Monte Viso

Very close to the City of Culture, on Monte Viso, you'll discover these unique sculptures of Galician mythological beings.

This trail opened in 2020, stretches for 6 km, and despite modest difficulty, offers 360-degree views of the city. Dress warmly—it's usually quite windy up here!

Along the well-marked path, you'll encounter various figures from Galician folklore, including witches, trasgos, and mouras.

Don't get distracted—they're everywhere!

A delightful and alternative route to explore Santiago de Compostela.

Numax Bookstore

This is no ordinary bookstore.

It's also a cinema, and that's what makes it special.

Beyond finding all the latest literary releases and extensive Galician materials, you can also watch new releases and independent films at very affordable prices in a comfortable, uncrowded space that frequently offers screenings in original language versions!

A unique experience if you love both books and films!

Café Jardín

If you get the chance, don't miss this Santiago treasure hiding in plain sight as a café.

Located in the heart of Santiago's old quarter, this café is part of the Hotel Costa Vella, but can of course be visited without being a guest—something we highly recommend.

It's truly a spectacular place to enjoy a proper breakfast in the morning sun or a restorative snack after exploring all the locations on this list.

Its impressive terrace, brimming with flowers, ponds, and sculptures, makes you feel as though you've stepped into an enchanted place!

As you can see, Santiago has so much more to offer beyond the Cathedral.

Galicia's capital presents countless possibilities. So now you know what to do when you visit Santiago de Compostela!
