As I shared in my first article of the Walking Advice column, human beings are naturally drawn towards everything that allows us in some way to "move forward", to surpass ourselves—we are inherently predisposed to movement and evolution. Despite societies over recent centuries emphasizing the importance of a fixed home and safe place, the truth is that settling down (abandoning nomadism) is not a characteristic that belongs to us, nor does it provide positive elements for our growth.
Though we may have forgotten it, each of us was born a traveller, a wanderer and a wayfarer, a restless soul, yet we also became one through experience and continuous practice which, like any other skill, has honed and improved our abilities, including that of travelling.
Whatever our familiarity and aptitude, what has always driven humans to travel is something linked to a powerful inner desire that often influences every other aspect of life: a sense of restlessness, an intense curiosity, the need to meet new people, to break free from convention.
It is motivation, in fact, that is the only thing that allows us to move and, if necessary, bring changes to our everyday life, modify our habits, discover new ways of living, and engage with others—something that, I hope, should happen in every journey you take.
The drives that guide our steps are truly varied, and they define what type of traveller you are. Sometimes they blend together, other times they are in direct opposition to everything we did before a certain moment.
Below you'll find some of them, divided into three main categories, which describe different ways of being a traveller—which one do you recognise yourself in most?
Savouring life
Do you like dedicating time to yourself and enjoying life's simple things? You probably fit into one of these categories!
A) Nature lover
You find peace and an absolute sense of wellbeing in connecting with nature. Even after a strenuous walk or steep climb, the satisfaction of reaching a breathtaking vista always leaves you speechless and your heart overflowing with joy. Whether on golden sand caressed by ocean waves, in a blooming meadow or a barren desert, among snow-capped peaks or autumn hillsides, nothing is more thrilling than immersing yourself in the environment around you: you breathe, close your eyes, and you're in paradise.
B) Passenger
You need to escape the daily hustle and reclaim your own space. You favour relaxation, the so-called "dolce far niente", and comfort; you want to experience every moment without worries and, above all, avoid any kind of commitment. You seek places where you can slow down the pace, let go and live in complete tranquillity: your only desire is to move unhurried between a lovely swim, a delicious meal, a good book and plenty of rest.

C) Explorer
You're the type of traveller who loves pushing to the extreme, surpassing your limits, continuously stretching your comfort zone, reaching unexplored destinations and acquiring new skills to "survive". You are an adventurer, always seeking fresh challenges, routes or journeys that will test you. Usually you travel solo because you need to feel free, to throw yourself into whatever situation presents itself, taking risks that not everyone would be willing to tolerate.
D) Urban Traveller
You're inspired by the greatness of people and civilisations that came before us, and you wish to retrace their footsteps through the ancient streets and historic sites; you love exploring the culture, traditions and cuisine of every place, to experience first-hand what you've read in books. Armed with guidebooks, you verify every detail about battles, important events, historical figures and everything that allows you to travel feeling completely part of each location's story.
Connecting with others
Do you love being in company and dedicating yourself to others? You'll definitely find your vibe here.
E) Volunteers
What motivates you to set out is the desire to help others, those in difficulty or needing a hand to realise projects for the greater good. You are a "humanitarian" traveller. You often head to distant destinations where you can engage with realities different from your own and, at the same time, make your contribution. You adapt to every situation and your goal is to enrich your personal experience with precious memories and bridge the distances between people.
F) Social backpacker
You want to meet other travellers, share experiences and have fun, so you always choose group trips or itineraries that allow you to encounter lots of people. You stay in hostels and similar places with shared spaces, so you can chat, cook together and organise activities. It doesn't matter where—what counts is being together, singing, laughing and joking as you move from a Van Gogh exhibition to an Irish pub.
Tell us in the comments what type of traveller you are!
One more thing—whether you're a backpacker, urban traveller or any other type of traveller, the important thing is to travel and discover new places and cultures... so all that's left for me is to wish you a wonderful journey!
