Walking Among Trees: Oxygen for the Soul

From ancient prehistoric civilizations to modern cultures, trees have always represented an important sacred symbol, a fundamental element of connection between the depths of the earth and the infinity of the sky, between the material and spiritual worlds.

The bond they share with humankind is certainly one of the strongest and most ancestral; probably because they are among the most ancient living beings on the planet, they grow everywhere and have accompanied human history since its very beginning. I don't believe it's coincidence that the passage of time is so well represented by the concentric rings visible inside tree trunks when they are cut: they testify that their presence has allowed us to live and survive until today.

Thanks to trees, throughout the centuries, we have had protection and shelter, food and timber, but also a positive influence on our more subtle dimension. For this reason, in various cultures and traditions, they have assumed important and different meanings as expressions of Life, Knowledge, Wisdom, Power, the Cosmos or Divinity.

Connection between sky and earth

Walking among the trees allows us to draw inspiration from them for our path of growth and evolution: a seed that, well planted in the soil, can germinate and become great, manifesting and expressing its essence in every direction.

Maintaining a perfect balance, they know how to let go of what no longer serves, shedding their leaves when autumn arrives, they rest to recover energy and then blossom again in spring to allow their fruits to burst with all their vitality. In a cyclical ritual, they continuously die and are reborn, drawing nourishment from Mother Earth to grow lush and renew themselves.

They represent life and its constant movement, transformation and change, our need for certainties and hope: through their roots we perceive stability and security, while the lightness of their branches makes us feel free to move and create.

Messages for the soul

Trees benefit our bodies through the process of photosynthesis, but they are also messengers for our soul.

Their energy is so powerful because it is conveyed both by oxygen, which helps harmonize our vital processes and our psychic and emotional sphere, and by their deep connection with the three levels of humanity and the universe: the underground level, that of the surface, and the upper level.

Whenever, during your walk, you feel tired, lost or hesitant, try to approach a tree and listen: you can embrace it, as silvotherapy recommends, or sit at its feet, leaning your back against the trunk and placing your right hand on your heart or on any part that feels it needs help. You will find immediate relief.

According to many cultures, each tree has a particular purpose, not only for our sustenance, but also for the benefit of our spirit: standing beside an oak you might feel a message of strength and power, while the hazel will invite you to meditation and introspection, in front of a willow you could have poetic inspiration, while the hawthorn will speak to your inner child and the ash will wish you a new beginning.

There is no doubt that walking among the trees, in nature, is a beneficial experience for our wellbeing, but by paying attention to the silent voice of the trees it can become truly magical.
