The Kumano Kodo is Japan's oldest and most celebrated pilgrimage route. Alongside the Shikoku pilgrimage (the path of 88 temples), it represents an increasingly sought-after destination for spiritual and religious pilgrims worldwide.

It stretches across the southernmost reaches of the Kii Peninsula, a sacred region formerly known as Kumano. Kumano is regarded as a place of spiritual renewal, the dwelling of the gods. It is a network of pathways that converge from multiple directions toward one of Japan's most important shrines, the Kumano Hongu Taisha. Together with the nearby Kumano Hayatama Taisha and Kumano Nachi Taisha, these form the three Grand Shrines of Kumano, the heart of this significant pilgrimage journey.
