How to Choose a Self-Guided Walking Holiday Operator: 5 Questions to Ask Before You Book
Every website looks the same.
Photographs of trails at golden hour. Words like "tailor-made," "authentic," "unforgettable." Five-star testimonials. A contact form.
Then you book, you go, and you find out the difference.
After helping over 30,000 people complete self-guided walking trips across 9 countries, we’ve seen what happens when the choice of operator is made well, and what happens when it isn’t. This is the honest version of what you should be asking before you hand over a single euro.
1. Do they hold a verified tour operator license?
This isn’t a bureaucratic question. It’s the most important question on this list.
A licensed tour operator is legally responsible for what happens during your trip. There are contracts, insurance policies, and formal accountability structures in place. If a property closes unexpectedly, if a transfer fails to show, if an emergency arises, someone is answerable. In writing. Under the law.
An unlicensed operator isn’t responsible for anything. No contract, no consumer protections, no legal recourse. It sounds like a minor distinction until it becomes your problem.
Ask for the license number before you book. Ours is XG-803, issued by the Spanish tourism authority.
2. Has the team personally walked the routes they sell?
Our team has walked 150+ routes in person. More than 30,000 km on our own feet. When we describe a specific section of a trail, that’s not something we read somewhere. That’s something we know.
3. Is logistics managed in-house or outsourced to third parties?
"Flight delayed, last bus missed, rescued by Deborah", that’s what Michela wrote after her walk. Her flight was delayed. She missed the last bus to her starting town. She called us. Deborah found a solution that same evening.
That’s not a story about extraordinary circumstances. It’s a story about who answers the phone.
4. What does support actually mean in practice?
492 verified reviews. 4.8 out of 5. The thing people mention most consistently isn’t the scenery, the accommodations, or the food. It’s knowing someone was there when they needed them.
5. Do reviews mention how problems were handled?
The revealing reviews are when something didn’t go as planned, and the review describes how it was managed. Look for those deliberately.
