There’s always an air of fascination and mystery surrounding the wanderer, a blend of curiosity and wariness, of attraction and bewilderment that reflects the perplexity toward an existence alien to normal habits and social conventions.
Semantically, the term describes one who moves beyond the city, covering long distances on foot or by slow means without a specific purpose, such as commerce or pilgrimage, in a context that echoes fairy tales rather than historical events.
Symbolically, however, the wanderer represents the innate tension of the human being to expand their horizons, to explore multiple planes of knowledge, to seek new paths, continually shifting both physical and mental boundaries, and questioning everything that is commonly accepted, in order to fully express themselves and their uniqueness.
In both cases, it's clear that the desire to travel surpasses the need for stability, to put down roots and have a home, driving the individual to never stop, to walk continuously, as if only through movement and the discovery of new places could they fill the questions of their inner world.
Recognising yourself as a wanderer: a choice that divides in two
With their first step outward, the wanderer marks a break from a life defined by traditional, familiar, cultural and social patterns, and one created entirely on their own terms, between accepting collective rules not fully shared and expressing their own authenticity, between the desire to feel integrated and the desire to be recognised as unique.
A choice that initially can be lived with pain and restlessness, due to the marginalisation, solitude and failure that such a decision sometimes brings, yet it is sustained by the awareness of having a great opportunity to give meaning to one's existence.
Only through personal experience, touching reality, pushing beyond the known and encountering what lies outside themselves can they truly decide whether to confirm the principles and values inherited from their community or modify and redefine them according to their own feeling: it is in the realm of opposites that one can identify and recognise their true limits.
Wanderers, in deep contact with themselves
Moreover, the need to withdraw and isolate oneself, equally important in the wanderer's experience, is essential in order to step back from encounters made and process them, to listen to one's sensations and thoughts, to manage the guilt that sometimes assails them for having decided to pursue their personal project while appearing to others as selfish or solitary.
The wanderer wants to discover who they are and their place in the world and knows that to do so requires venturing into the unknown while remaining grounded. Through their example, they teach us to always be true to ourselves, to seek our autonomy and independence, not to become hermits or rebels, but to build positive relationships not founded on the need for validation.
Don't deceive yourself, you don't change your life simply by choosing to wander the world, first you must be willing to face yourself and call yourself into question, you must be aware of the obstacles that travel inevitably presents, have the desire to reconnect with your own soul, which may be buried beneath old, deeply rooted mechanisms difficult to dismantle... An intense and profound journey, not merely wandering along paths, that is absolutely worth undertaking!
