The eighth stage of the Portuguese Coastal Way: almost 21km from Ramallosa to Vigo, passing through eucalyptus forests, parks and suburban towns.

#Day8
Ramallosa – Vigo 21km
We set off from Ramallosa around 10 in the morning. We took shelter in a bar for breakfast, waiting for the rain to ease up enough to walk without getting completely soaked. We said goodbye to our fellow pilgrims knowing we'd likely not cross paths again on the Way: the Polish couple would head to Porto that very day to catch their flight back to Warsaw; the two South Korean women would stop before Vigo, as would the two American girls.

We started out with a light drizzle that alternated between nothing and heavy rain throughout the day. We hadn't even covered a kilometre when we nearly lost our way: probably distracted by the streams of water running across the road, we missed a blue scallop shell marker painted on the ground and took a path through the fields instead. We realised our mistake almost immediately though, as we saw no arrows, and after retracing our steps we found the right route again. We were lucky—we only lost about ten minutes.
Through small settlements and beautiful forest trails we reached a stone marker telling us Santiago was just 101.5km away. A scallop shell and an arrow were carved into the front, while the back displayed the figure of a pilgrim complete with hat, walking stick and cloak.
Just a kilometre further on, we spotted the sign marking 100km to Santiago.
It's always moving to see that the finish line is within reach, that there's not much further to go, that Santiago is waiting for us.
We were almost at the end of the forest when we spotted, beside the yellow arrow of the Way, a detour marked with a green arrow and the sign for Freixo. Freixo is a small hamlet about 7km from Vigo where there's a pilgrims' hostel: many pilgrims choose to head there instead of straight to Vigo because the city has no dedicated pilgrim accommodation.
[av_dropcap1]Heads up![/av_dropcap1] If you choose this route, remember that Freixo has nothing—no bars or restaurants—so either bring your own food or, when you call the hospitalero to let him know you're arriving (and please do call—he'll come specially for you), ask if he can prepare a hot meal for dinner. From Freixo, you can easily continue the next day and reach Vigo and then Redondela.
For us, the stage ends in Vigo, so we decided to follow the yellow arrows. We reached the outskirts of Vigo, which as often happens isn't particularly special. Once in the city, it's not so easy to find your way, especially since some of the painted arrows have faded and haven't been replaced. We crossed the city park and arrived 50 metres from the bus station. We abandoned the arrows and, GPS in hand, reached our accommodation for the night.
Tomorrow we were in for a beautiful stage ahead—heading to Redondela.
Curious to see what the future holds!
