Årsgång: Walking Through Darkness into the New Year

If you haven’t yet made plans for New Year’s Eve and are seeking something truly extraordinary, Sweden might just offer the inspiration you need. Enter the Årsgång—a traditional New Year propitiation walk that stirs memories, pleasant and otherwise, among those who remember it; a legendary ritual shrouded in mystical wonder, rooted in the ancient customs of seventeenth-century Sweden, cyclically undertaken by those yearning to glimpse their destiny and unlock the secrets of the year ahead.

According to tradition, this is the time of year when it becomes possible to experience something transcendent, suspended between reality and imagination, offering a glimpse into one’s fate. Yet calling it merely a “walk” would be misleading, despite its name. This journey demands considerable courage and resolve: a solitary wandering into the forest with no map or compass, guided only by instinct, seeking veiled signs or mysterious beings that might illuminate your path—or conversely, confront you with physical, mental, and spiritual challenges.

No one can predict what fate will unfold, but the journey will undoubtedly be unforgettable—especially should you encounter one of the entities whispered about in the tales of those who came before: the “Mylingen,” the spirit of an abandoned child seeking nourishment, the stream horse that enchants the unwary before dragging them into the water, or the huldra, a tree-like nymph who grants her favour only to a chosen few. Yet there are friendlier encounters too—with dwarves and elves.

Certainly, this is an unconventional way to mark the turning of the year and an opportunity to test yourself, immersing completely in the darkness that defines this season—both literal and symbolic—to explore the shadowed, ambiguous, unsettling aspects of existence: an initiation marked by passage through darkness to discover light.

Those who undertake the “Year Walk” must, however, observe strict protocols: you must fast and approach with genuine intent, greet no one, speak or laugh with no person along the way, and neither kindle nor gaze upon any fire for the entire day.

The walk should always conclude at a cemetery or near a church. Upon completing the Årsgång, the traveller may be granted extraordinary visions: a procession of dancers in ceremonial dress, phantoms, graves, small men bearing hay-laden carts, woodcutters and other metaphorical figures, signifying greater or lesser fortune for the year to come.

Legend further tells that the intrepid pilgrim who successfully completes the ritual for seven consecutive years faces a final trial: a duel with a horseman bearing a stirrup between his teeth, which must be disarmed with skill to prove you have acquired knowledge of all hidden things and thus possess the power to foretell the future.

Perhaps it won’t prove as reassuring as a group tour to Kyoto, nor as captivating as tracing the Fishermen’s Trail, and it lacks the hallmarks of a conventional walking journey. Yet without question, it may well be the most extraordinary walk of your life.
