Autumn has arrived, a natural season of transition that invites us to rest and meditation. As Mother Earth prepares for her cyclical transformation, we can reflect on the path we've walked during the year and take stock of the fruits we've gathered. This is the perfect time to look inward, ask ourselves profound questions, and better understand what has been and how we've experienced it.
It's also time to slow down and step back. Break free from the demands of a system that wants us to be fast and reactive, and reconnect with the present moment and, consequently, with ourselves. By following the rhythm of nature, we can restore value to our lives, without being overwhelmed by external pressures, and rediscover the pleasure of doing things, fully enjoying each moment, simply existing.
So then, come on, over the next few months, take it easy! Linger, pause, reflect, sleep, regain your energy, relax.
How to do it? Here are some "slow-paced" tips to escape the mechanism of "everything right now".
1. Go to bed early
Let's start at the end to guarantee ourselves a good beginning.
Your days cannot be endless and rest is our primary source of energy, so when fatigue sets in, go to sleep. At first it might not be easy, but the important thing is to try: shift your usual bedtime earlier by 10 minutes at a time and, you'll see that with consistency, you'll benefit.
2. Wake up calmly
Don't jump out of bed the moment the alarm goes off; give yourself some time to start the day at the pace that pleases you most. You can set your alarm 15 minutes earlier to prepare yourself calmly and allow your body to wake up gradually.
3. Savour your food
A good breakfast, healthy and balanced, is essential—enjoy it slowly, just as you should all your other meals of the day. Eating should be a form of pleasure and is a reflection of our attitude towards life: if we gulp everything down without perceiving what we put in our mouths, this reflects in the way we live. Appreciate the flavour and aroma of your food.
4. Do one thing at a time
Despite being a highly sought-after skill, multitasking is not among healthy activities for human beings. Numerous studies show that doing multiple things simultaneously slows our abilities, increases the risk of errors, and compromises memory. One step at a time.
5. Disconnect
Free yourself from smartphones and computers: turn them off, leave them at home, lock them away. Even if we don't realise it, all technological devices can lead us to develop obsessive and addictive patterns that produce no well-being. Being exposed to a constant flow of information and possible requests fuels the need for control, anxiety, and distraction. Pull the plug!
6. Share real experiences
Direct your attention to the people around you and those you meet on the street, at a café, or at work; stop for a chat, exchange ideas and opinions, listen with interest, play and build something together. The time you dedicate to your relationships is the most precious you have.
7. Appreciate emptiness and waiting
Don't fill at all costs the moments that seem empty and meaningless to you. Be present and aware in every instant, observe your actions, the environment around you, the people near you, the situation you're experiencing, and if your mind wanders to past or future events, try to return to the "here and now": it's the only true moment you're living.
8. Lose yourself in nature and breathe
Take a walk in the open air, observe the trees up close, smell the earthy scent of mushrooms, follow the clouds in the sky, let yourself be rained on, breathe deeply. Whenever you feel overwhelmed by stress and fatigue, immerse yourself in nature and walk at a slow pace, listening to every heartbeat and every breath. There is life.
