Ce mois d'octobre, 28.232 pèlerins sont arrivés à Santiago de Compostela. Un nombre considérable si l'on considère les 25.574 de l'année précédente et les 23.206 d'avant celle-ci. Le Chemin continue de connaître un succès remarquable auprès des pèlerins et marcheurs du monde entier.
L'expression « du monde entier » n'est pas une simple figure de style, comme il pourrait le sembler, mais une réalité bien établie et connue de tous. Quiconque l'a parcouru sait qu'il peut rencontrer des personnes de toute nationalité et parlant toutes les langues.
Néanmoins, c'est seulement au cours des 8 à 9 dernières années que le Chemin de Saint-Jacques a connu des chiffres véritablement significatifs. La diffusion de livres, blogs et films a certainement contribué à le faire connaître à un public plus large et plus divers.
Il est donc plausible que ces mêmes facteurs aient déterminé une présence beaucoup plus importante d'Australiens, de Japonais et d'Américains sur le Chemin de Saint-Jacques.
C'est précisément sur la présence de nombreux pèlerins américains sur le Chemin de Saint-Jacques que je souhaite me concentrer dans ces dernières lignes.

Les Américains sur le Chemin de Saint-Jacques
Pour nous Européens, il peut sembler surprenant de voir des milliers d'Américains affluer chaque année sur les routes vers la capitale de la Galice. En réalité, l'Europe « latine » a toujours été l'une des destinations les plus prisées et recherchées par le public américain, qui y voit quelque chose d'exotique et de différent.
Mais le Chemin de Saint-Jacques n'est pas une destination touristique comme les autres. C'est une expérience particulière, unique. Pourquoi donc ce choix ?
L'Oficina de Acogida al Peregrino nous fournit un outil fondamental pour déterminer l'évolution et les tendances des pèlerins américains sur le Chemin de Saint-Jacques.
En étudiant les statistiques que cette institution publie mensuellement, on peut d'abord noter que les États-Unis figurent chaque mois parmi les huit premières nationalités étrangères sur le Chemin.
En octobre, 2.617 Américains sont arrivés à Santiago, soit près de 1.000 de plus que les Italiens, qui en ont comptabilisé 1.649.
L'année qui a marqué le tournant le plus spectaculaire concernant la présence d'Américains sur le Chemin de Saint-Jacques, celle qui a enregistré des chiffres véritablement sans précédent, a été 2012.
Par rapport à l'année précédente, il y a eu une augmentation de 76 % du nombre de pèlerins, confirmée par une nouvelle augmentation de 75 % en 2013.
En résumé, en deux ans, de 2011 à 2013, le nombre de pèlerins américains a augmenté de 210 %. Certes, la tendance générale du Chemin de Saint-Jacques était positive au cours de ces années, mais elle tournait autour de 10 à 15 %, bien loin des chiffres que nous venons de présenter.
On est donc en droit de se demander comment des milliers de personnes ont pu, d'une année à l'autre, décider de traverser l'océan et de parcourir le Chemin de Saint-Jacques.
L'un des événements qui, à mon avis, a eu un impact décisif sur cette décision est la sortie du film « The Way » en 2010.

« The Way » et « Sur les chemins de Saint-Jacques », le cinéma au service du pèlerinage
« The Way », sorti aux États-Unis en septembre 2010, est l'un des films les plus célèbres jamais réalisés sur le Chemin de Saint-Jacques. Des acteurs de la trempe de Martin Sheen et d'Emilio Estevez (père et fils dans la vie comme à l'écran) ont conféré au film une renommée et une profondeur remarquables.
Jusqu'à ce moment, le Chemin vers Santiago n'était pas très connu outre-Atlantique. Il était parcouru par seulement quelques milliers d'Américains chaque année.
En l'espace de deux ans cependant, le nombre d'Américains sur le Chemin de Saint-Jacques a doublé, triplé, jusqu'à atteindre des dizaines de milliers.
Bien sûr, de nombreux autres facteurs ont contribué à ce résultat, mais il faut reconnaître aussi la puissance remarquable qu'a le cinéma de façonner ```
